Culinary Students of The Art Institutes Compete on Iron Chef America

In an unprecedented battle, students from The International Culinary School at The Art Institutes were invited to compete on Food Network’s popular series Iron Chef America. This challenge marks the first time in the show’s history that culinary students have been invited to compete in Kitchen Stadium.

The student-challenger team included Katelyn Remick, Julie Fiedler and Tyler Burke, all of whom attend The Art Institute of Phoenix. They were supported by two alternate student challengers, Cameron Terrasas and Dezirea Elizondo. All of these students were selected based upon their academic and performance experience as well as a deep passion for the culinary arts. To prepare for the Iron Chef America battle, the student-challengers practiced four-to-five times per week in addition to attending classes.

According to Chef Eric Watson, assistant academic director, this team has competed together for more than two years, receiving two gold and two silver medals in state and regional American Culinary Federation competitions.
“Most of the world’s best chefs never have an opportunity to challenge the Iron Chefs, let alone appear on national television,” Watson said. “It’s an incredible honor and an experience of a lifetime for all of us.”
The episode premieres on Sunday, September 27th at 9pm ET/PT and features the students battling Iron Chef Michael Symon.

Ode to a Chipotle burrito
wins $10,000 for Texan

Shane Connelly likes his Chipotle burrito with steak, peppers and onions, black beans and cheese; no lettuce. For that, plus a little musical and video talent, he gets $10,000.

Connelly, of Denton, Texas, was proclaimed the winner Monday of Denver-based Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.'s "My Chipotle" contest for the best customer-generated commercial.

Contestants created ads about their favorite combination of burrito ingredients and uploaded them to Chipotle's website. Connelly's do-it-yourself spot for his "Oso Closo Burrito" featured a saucy little soul tune about its ingredients. Besides winning the $10,000 grand prize, Chipotle plans to add Connelly's burrito recipe to its Dallas-area menus for a limited time.

Clay Carnill of Rochester, Mich., took second place for his rap-style spot. He gets $5,000 and a party at a local Chipotle for 50 friends.

Chipotle claims there are 60,000 possible combinations of ingredients for its burritos.

"We received thousands of submissions with dramatically different approaches and including everything from original music to animation and photography," Mark Crumpacker, Chipotle chief marketing officer, said in a statement. "The common thread through them all was just how passionate these customers are about their favorite Chipotle food."

The winning and runner-up amateur ads can be viewed at http://www.mychipotle.com/#/home.

The overall "My Chipotle" campaign was developed by Butler Shine Stern and Partners of Sausalito, Calif. Chipotle (NYSE: CMG) operates about 900 restaurants.

Introducing The Backbeat Cafe

Looking for a place to book your act or show? Read below for more info on this new and exciting venue!

The Backbeat Cafe & Listening Room
(formerly Opening Bell - Mosaic)
http://www.backbeatcafe.com/
300 N. Akard St. Dallas 75201

It's very much a cross between a Jazz Cafe and a downtown coffee shop - connected by a small hallway to an intimate peforming space ... located across the street from the historic Thanks-Giving Square near the rail line off Akard and Pacific.

Our philosophy is to concentrate on local talent in promoting an array of musicians and artists from jazz nights to acoustic sets - dj's to spoken word performances - while also booking regional touring acts - comedians - special parties and events.

Furthermore - the set-up (for the artists) is the best deal in town:
* NO venue fee
* Light & sound man included
* & the artist(s) gets to keep 100% of the door (set your own price!)
* the only thing we ask in return is promotion of the venue and patronage of the cafe & bar : )

Please contact Nicole Rincon at nrincon@aii.edu if you would be interested in more info or booking a night with Backbeat Cafe.
